Takes a fair amount of effort to initially overcome the grip of the 
lock ring--but it'll yield quite suddenly. Getting a good grip is 
especially hard to manage with the limited workspace behind the 
driver-side headlamp unit. Of course you should completely remove 
(not merely open) the access door.
