91 200 Avant clutch pedal

Mike,
    Not sure if this is relevant, but last weekend I just replaced my
clutch master cylinder (6 hours in 6 degree F. temps .. and couldn't use
gloves :-( ).  The small shaft  on top of the master broke near the top
of the petal.  On the original shaft there was a 2" diameter 1" thick
rubber connector near the top (shock protection?).  It snapped between
the 2 locking nuts about 1/4" from the top.  It was probably bending a
little bit over time and finally snapped with one large popping sound.
 The replacement part was a single shaft (not two part like the
original) and was steel (not alloy like original) but was only $80.00 vs
audi dealer price of $270.  Your shaft could possible be bent.  There is
also a small shock absorber looking thing attached to the petal and the
firewall (I think).  It appears to help pop the petal back once it has
gone half way back ... it could be sticking.  This car has a heavy
clutch petal ...compared to 5K's and my A4 (very light).   Good luck.
