I don't recall anything about replacing the check valve on the pump on
Chris's repair pages.  The check valve on the older pumps is external, but
I doubt you could remove it from the pump without removing the pump from
the tank.  You need to use two wrenches to loosen the check valve, I
believe, and you'd need really skinny arms to get two hands/wrenches inside
the tank.  If it were me, I'd be replacing the pump if I'm going to get
that far into it.  The newer pumps, which are illustrated on Chris's site,
have an internal check valve.  They also require some new wiring, new hoses
and an intermediate part to anchor the pump in its retaining basket.
