Still makes no sense to me.
Timing belt attaches crank to cam shaft so they rotate in unison.
The distributor is driven off the camshaft.
a loose timing belt may cause damage in that the timing of the crank and cam is off, which would cause the pistons to impact the valves.
Current timing between the cam and crank can be checked easily -
rotate the crank until you can see the 0 in the transmission flywheel window

and also remove the cam belt cover and check to see that the dimple on the cam is in the correct position to indicate #1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center.

This should take no longer than 1/2hour. ( sheesh - 15 minutes would be long)
If the timing between camshaft and crank is correct, you just need to deal with removal of broken plastic from under the valver cover and maybe a few oil changes to get the bits out.
I just hate to see you get taken by these guys....
