with a sheepish look on my face...

.... I offer apologies to Brian Link. Soon after I sent a negative response
to his suggestion that a PS leak might be the actual source of my suspected
"camshaft oil seal leak", I decided to have another look...a more careful
look. The re-exam was prompted by a sudden recollection: that last month I
needed to top-off the Pentosin reservoir with an ounce or two--for the
first time ever. Just where did I think that stuff was going? :-(
So, although my previous post indicated I had detected no leak at the
underside of the PS pump, there it was. I had previously given only a
cursory look/feel from the driver's side of the pump. A more careful exam
with inspection mirror shows lots of seepage which leads to the area behind
the TB cover and thence to the oil pan. The oil that looked so much like
engine oil is apparently dirty Pentosin (picks up lots of crud on its way
down to the crankcase.)
Several years ago I replaced the PS pump seals at all the external caps (as
well as the internal o-rings), although I ended up not doing the check
valves (incredibly tight) or the pulley-shaft seal at that time.
So...another item gets added to my maintenance agenda.
