Wheels spacers

Hi Dave,
Like you, I had some initial apprehensions about spacers. But my wheels just
won't clear the new brakes so it is either new wheels or spacers.
You can imagine 2 kinds of load on the axel. Axial loads that push/pull
along the axel axis, and radial loads that act 90 degrees to that axis. I
have heard theories that spacers, by moving the radial load further from the
wheel bearings, can cause a torsional load (radial load x thickness of the
spacer) on the bearings. I have also heard learned refutations of that
argument which I have since forgotten. But it seems to me that using wheels
with less ET to get more space for brakes would have exactly the same effect
since the centerline of the wheel is displaced with respect to the mounting
face of the hub. So take your pick.
I have come to the point where I don't worry too much. I just ordered 2x15mm
spacers for my car.
YMMV
Rich

Subject: Wheels spacers
I am looking for some opinions on using wheel spacers. Is there any
downside to only using them for the front wheels? I am looking at
another set of wheels that don't clear my front brakes without spacers.
Thanks,
