Bill,

You're on the right track with the trunk thing.  The problem is likely with
the wiring that's at the hinge area of the trunk.  Opening and closing the
trunk with Audi's lack of hardly any slack in the wiring leads to breaks in
the wiring.  You'll have to lie in the trunk with a flashlight and you'll
likely see what I mean.  Simple to repair (but I suggest disconnecting the
battery first).
