As Kneale has posted, we don't get the caps as part of the rebuild
kit. And although I've never had to buy replacement caps, I'd expect
locating them here (except in a junkyard) might take a while. Hence,
I certainly _would_ worry about damaging the caps. I've done the
rebuild twice and found it's rather easy to loosen the caps with the
draglink socket, hammer and impact wrench. I secure the pump within
the jaws of a very modest-size vise (barely opens wide enough) and
also support the underside (cap end) of the pump with a small block
of wood while I whack at it. Having a helper to stabilize the pump
would be nice, but wasn't needed.

One more point: if you do the job without the draglink socket, then
you will be unable tighten the caps  to spec using a torque wrench. I
know some people never bother to torque-wrench much of anything,
but...
