Dies With Clunking Sound!

Bentley won't tell you. If you have a partly broken gear, missing a portion
of a tooth or teeth, you should be able to feel it at some postion in the
rotation of the rotor. If as you say, it starts, the gear is not broken
completely. The first rev upon cranking tells the ECU which TDC is
compression stroke after which the dist has nothing to with spark timing,
only spark distribution to the correct plug. Have you pulled the ECU's
engine fault codes?
