Scott,
I had the same problem a year ago.
I eventually rounded off the 17mm hex.
The fix: I welded on a nut (3/4" thd) over the 17mm plug.
Now the hex is 1-1/8".  Used a cheater bar to remove the plug.
If you use this method, just be sure to control the weld splatter.

Oil plug extraction via impact wrench.
I know it seems wrong but I'm having trouble removing the sedans 17mm plug.
The Avant had a larger socket head (from memory) but needed the impact
wrench
too even after 1500 miles since head rebuild.

The sedan just won't budge. 80 psi and ~200 ft lbs.  Car is Mid Atlantic
salt
free.
oil filter was a snap now what?  Liquid wrench (PB Blaster) etc.  Time for
the torch?
