chipping 3B's

You're paying for the know-how of the person developing the chip, their
skill in opening up your ECU to replace the chips and PT (without cracking
something), their willingness to stand behind their product, support for you
if/when something doesn't go as expected, etc.  No, this stuff isn't
rocket-science, and many on these lists have raw skills that will get this
to work.

Remember--altho these cars continue to drop in price, the cost of repairing
a grenaded engine isn't cheap!

As for technical protection: I know at least vendor employs some such device
embedded in the "socket" used to replace the original ECU socket.  What
others do, I do not know.
