is this my distributer gear?

Good puppy left me stranded this morning at my
daughter's school instead of at a stop light like some
folks.

Symptoms.... car started fine when I got in to drive
to work after dropping off my daughter.  After idling
for about 2 seconds the engine started stumbling and
the idle speed gradually got lower and lower until it
died.

Subsequent tries to start result in the engine turning
over but unable to maintain idle.  Feels like I need
to give it gas but doing so does absolutely nothing in
getting the engine to work.

I have the distributer gear and was hoping to get
around to it mid-spring.  Can someone confirm for me
that this is indeed the problem?  Search of the
archives pulled up nothing although I know there has
been discussion about it.

car has ~136k miles and has been hard to start lately.
