shift linkage repair?

It turned out to be in 3rd gear, all linkage is intact except for center
ball join which for some reason came loose. I managed to get car on oil
change ramps and put ball join together but do not believe all the way
down. As far as I can see there is no access from the top (should I
remove pentozin canister?) and it is next to impossible to get any tools
from the bottom.....
