Yep, it can be quite difficult to see the flywheel mark. The mark 
tends to "fly" by that window very (too) quickly. If you have a 
helper, have him/her slowly wrench the crank (remove sparkplug) while 
you look at the flywheel window. Also, getting that inspection window 
properly lighted can be difficult. I found that the mark became 
extremely easy to see once I began using my long-necked "flex-light". 
This is a dandy little AA-battery flashlight (about $15 at Sears or 
Pep Boys) with a long ( 14 or 15 inch), very narrow flexible neck 
that lets you place a high-intensity, focused beam right on the spot 
you need to see. This helps that flywheel mark to really "pop".
