Dat's it!!! It looks exactly like the O'rings can have been stretched in
some section rather than subject to pure compression.

Thanks, I think I finally know what went wrong.

The O-rings sealing the X cylinder heads are subjected to a rotary squeeze
when the head is screwed into place.  If the O-ring is not well lubed with
EP grease or antisieze it may be stretched thin in some places and therefore
will be subject to failure at those thinned out places.  Lube well when
installing, hyd fluid is not sufficient.
