Dan:
A replacement metal distributor drive gear is not available to audi.
Over a year ago, thanks to Bernie Benz and Derek Pulvino, there was a limited run made of replacement gears by a machine shop.
That limited run has sold out. Unless you are able to purchase one from a previous member of that group purchase, your only alternative is a replacement distributor.
I led a GP for replacement distributors about a year ago. We were able to get them for about $220. I think that audi list is about $400, and typical price is in the $280 range.
I recently purchased a replacement gear from Frank Stadtmeyer, but it is already spoken for.
Audi Driver had an article on replacing the gear in its Jan Feb 2003 issue.
There used to be a copy at http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/articles/audi_driver_feb03/page1.jpg, but the site appears to be down.
