Hey all,
First, thanks to David, Dave, Kneale, Peter, Chi, Brice, Henry, Steve,
Jerald, Bernie, and of course Scott in BOSTON (from who's site I first
learned of the distributor problem) for all your useful input. I'll try
to document my process of distributor removal/replacement (including the
hold-down nut which was hidden under a cover) when I put my new one back
in.
In the mean time, I took a few pictures of the distributor carnage.
Basically, it looks like a few teeth broke off, then got wedged between
the cam and distributor gear. The plastic gear shattered in to many
pieces at that point. The internals of the distributor still function
just fine. When/if I get a replacement gear I'll keep the whole thing as
a spare. The link to the images is at:

I don't really have any useful information out on the rest of site yet,
but it will be there some day.
Thanks again for all the help.
