Sounds more like catalytic converter substrate breaking up and blocking
exhaust, high backpressure causing overheating to me, but what do I know.
Climate control (A/C compressor anyway) is supposed to quit if you are
overheating the coolant, that is a working-as-designed feature.
You can check backpressure with the little CO test connection pipe after the
turbo...shouldn't be too much.
