Generally the rubber diaphragm tears on one of the folds inside.
Bosch has -never- managed to make one that actually lasts, except for
a supposedly very durable unit used on some Porsche turbos. They've
even had to redesign them at least once- units made in the last 6+
years have a brass weight to keep them from making a reportedly
hysterical "hooting" noise that affected early-80's Saab turbos. I
think Audi has made it up to J or K on the part number.

When I discussed it with Eli @Shine Racing, he said the Forge valve
is more expensive, but has a lifetime replacement warranty of some
sort, and can be disassembled and cleaned. Nobody (himself included,
he had a FWD 80 with a 1.8t conversion) has had to have one replaced
or clean one.

I'm not particularly inclined to replace mine with a Forge unit even
if that's the case.  I've had pretty good luck with them lasting;
they only fail for me every 60k or more, even with a chip...and I'm
not sure I really see myself keeping my 200q20v another hundred plus
thousand miles.
