Shifter boot malfuntion - 1987 5000

Had the same problem with a 1987 5000cs (just sold w/ 254k).  Tried the remedies you mentioned, also without success.  Ultimately "fixed" the problem by drilling 2 small holes through the plastic frame and into the areas the clips are supposed to seat, then screwed the boot frame down.  Screws were barely visible, and the problem was solved.
