Detaching parking brake cable

I'm getting ready to drop the rear diffy enough to let me change the
leaking gas tank. Bentley says to pull the parking brake cables off the
calipers and out of the guides mounted to the diffy support. I can get the
cables disengaged from their lever arms with no problem, but I can't recall
how to get the cable free of the caliper short of destroying the boot and
the sheath. It's all rusted together there where the cable sheath passes
through the hole in the caliper, so I can't tell what's supposed to come
apart.
