200q Center bearing Repair

Tom,
I'm not familiar with the noise that the driveshaft center bearing
makes when in need of lube, however what you've described is similar
to a very common noise in 100+ kmile cars. This is a metallic
scraping noise --only while you coast in gear and off-throttle--that
eminates from somewhere directly below the center console area. It's
definitely not coming from the rear. It has defied definite
diagnosis, and my Audi wrench didn't think it was driveshaft related.
Many posts on this subject although no solutions. I've found that the
noise disappears almost completely by pulling up on the shift lever
(i.e., parallel to the lever). Doing this requires very little force
and a movement of about 1/8" or less.
I've begun to wonder if that (my) noise might be related to excessive
wear in the shift-lever bushing, the ball-and-socket (or whatever) in
that linkage. Initially I only could hear the noise in 1-4th gears,
but eventually it could be heard in 5th, too. Eventually I'll get
down in there and have a look at the shift linkage, but so far I've
just tried to ignore it. Shifting is fine.
