avant roof rack

What are other avant owners doing when plagued with corrosion and peeling of the 
chrome plating on the horizontal tubes, 4 of them, making up the roof rack? The 
roof mounts, 6 of them, are OK so far; but the tubes are in bad shape from the 
plating peeling and flaking off, leaving visible rust spots. 

Has anyone looked at used auto parts / salvage sources with any success?
