Had the same problem with mine.  What I did was took them off, bead blasted 
them, and powder coated them black.  They look great! and have held up for 
years and 100k of driving.  Make sure that the chrome is rough enough to hold the 
powder coat.  Separating the ends from the bar was quite difficult.  Put the 
tube in a vice with soft rubber jaws, than heat up the joint with a heat gun 
and pull strait off.  The first 1/4 inch must be pulled strait, than you can 
begin twisting.  I have a friend with one of those do it your self powder coat 
kits that works great.
