This question keeps coming up. No, the k26 is an older design and
not as efficient, and yes, lag will be unbearable to the point you
won't want to drive the car; much of the 20vt's design involved quick
response, and that is what matters to most people in daily driving;
you're not driving Talladega, or you'd have a turbo the size of a
tire. There is no substitute here, save a Garrett turbo as some have
done. Claus was running a rather large Garett turbo that was far
more efficient but took much longer to spool. There is no free lunch.
Yes, boost is limited intentionally by the ECU at higher revs. If
you want more power, get a chip. If you've got a chip and want still
more power, you're going to have to spend the bucks, and there's no
shortcut around needing a new exhaust manifold, a different turbo,
and so on.
Two very old sayings: Drive like a sport, pay like a sport. Speed
costs money, how fast do you want to go?
