I was fortunate enough that fellow lister Shawn Olsen came to assist me
with his 17 mm stubby. And I had "Kroiled" the bolts the previous evening
so the stubby was sufficient (did require considerable strength...but
worked)
(yes, Shawn, I still have your stubby......)

I don't know of any other way you could do it, save remove the whole
manifold.

Removing turbo on '91 200 20V Quattro

What is the trick, special tool to get off the bottom bolt closest to the
engine on the turbo for the 200q20v.  I've had some difficult ones, but
#@%*&MFPITA!SOB no clearance for extensions, not enouogh room for a socket
wrench, I ground down one wrench, but it would not take the force, and I
don't think I'll have enough strength if I get a stubby in there - need I
say more.  For a design where turbo is far more accessible than its
predecessor, I'd rather do the 5ktq.

So appreciate any helpful BTDT that works.
