Doesn't anyone on the A4 list have ETKA? The P/N for the
"adjuster unit for vehicles
with adjustable lumbar support", left side, is 8D0 881 879 A. You
might be luckier if
the inside end of the knob broke off. It looks less expensive and
easier to replace.
P/N 8D0 881 671 D 01C (satin black). Illustration is 881-50.
Looks like the lumbar
support began with VIN 8D-W-250 001.

I had this problem with my wife's Volvo 740 after being in "the
position" working under
the dash with the seat reclined for leg room. I shouldn't have
sat up with my butt on
the back rest. You know what happened next. Fortunately the one
plastic part that broke
(that held the lumbar support, a plain cloth strap, to the
adjuster) was individually
replaceable and plainly visible on Volvo's parts drawing. I don't
see such details in
ETKA.

I had to detach the bottom of the backrest cover and lift the
bottom several inches up
over itself until I could access the broken part. Wasn't
difficult.

If you need a pdf or such of the ETKA illustration let me know.

So after testing all possible combinations I found the car starts
with the new lower board chip (near the transducer) and the stock
upper board chip. I left it that way and still haven't heard from
Mihnea though Ben Swann has offered to help any way he can. Is
there any risk in operating the car this way? What does the upper
chip do?

Someone (on one of the lists?) has just hit the $25K reserve.
This is
sort of terrifying. As usual I've been too busy to promote or
even post
good pictures so I've been assuming it gets ignored.

Replaced the radiator in my wife's ovloV 945t today...the plastic
end-tank
ruptured right where it was crimped to the core.
Apart from having to drive 15 miles to pick up the replacement,
from start to
finish took about 45 minutes, including filling the tank, checking
for leaks,
and cleaning up the mess in the driveway. The more I work on
other cars, the
more I wonder "what were they thinking" when they designed Audis.

Most annoying about this was that 4 years ago, I did this same job
when the the
tube for the radiator hose broke off the original radiator. So
the OEM
radiator went 6 years, the aftermarket Nissens went only 4
years -- hmm...same
brand I installed in my 200q a year ago. This time, given the
choice between
another Nissens and the genuine Volvo article for $20 more, I got
the Volvo
branded, made in Sweden radiator.

One last item: Scott Mockry (SJMAutotechnik) is a great source
for more than
Audi parts, but have a part # handy if you can.

Is there a special tool to loosen the allen head screw on the top
of the
front shock tower? It looks like it is a 7mm hex wrench - but, I
looked at 6
sets of hex wrenchs yesterday and all of them went from 6mm to
8mm.

I have a 7mm in my allen set, pretty sure that's not what I used.

It's not really a screw, it's the top of the damper shaft; the
allen socket
is to keep it from turning while you undo the nut. Reinstalling
to torque
involves a crow-foot or the magic socket with a big hole in the
side so
you can use an allen wrench on the shaft.

I am trying to complete a GB of bigger brakes for our UrQs and
200/5000s. I
again have most of the pieces in place except shipping. Any one
have a
source willing to crate a couple of hundred pounds up and ship
here? Anyone
bringing stuff over with room to spare? ANy ideas appreciated.
thx
Mike

The source of the awful "swirling and shaking screws in a coffee
can" noise has been found to be coming from the propeller shaft cv
joint. Bentley says the shaft is non-repairable; and is of
preposterous expence. Has anyone rebuilt one? Parts?

However, it definitely seems there is something wrong with the
steering, the steering wheel it still stays slightly left after
making
a left turn... and vice versa after making a right turn... Its
VERY
scary on the freeway when the steering wheel wont "turn" the car
in
this play area.. (about 10* either way)

I just want to see if anyone has the same issue before throwing
more
money at it... is there anything I can check without taking the
rack
off?

Thanks!

David
1990 90q 20v]

David,

I would suspect one of your strut bearings may be binding. This
is what happened on my 200q20v - would pull in one direction then
the other after the wheel was turned. The bearing when they go
bad will bind and twist the spring causing the steering to be
pulled in one direction or the other. This can be accompanied by
a clunk sound.

Ben
