Ned,
You almost sound like this cam break off is a common occurrence! Short of an
old plastic gear tooth lodging in the mesh of two steel gears, what is your
speculation as to what could cause the end of a heavy cast iron cam to just
break off?  Does this catastrophe also strip the timing belt?
