Actually, a local shop here (Tiffin, OH) recommends the R-12 compatible
solution. I forget which one - maybe Autofrost.

They claim that the 134a refrigerant runs at higher pressures and is more
of a hassle because it results in more leaks from tired older A/C systems.
According to the owner, they originally went the route of 134a conversions
because that was what they were told was best, but now they have learned
more and they try to steer people away from 134a conversions.

Oh, and the R134a conversion I had done on my 5kcstq two years ago
(different shop, different town, different state) has come up MIA this
spring. I will probably try a DIY R12 compatible conversion, which means
undoing the R134a conversion.
