Error Code 2111

My check engine light has been coming on intermittently over the last
month (I don't drive it often). More recently, the check engine light
has been on more frequently. The last trip it was steady most the time.
Each time I've checked the error codes (always with the engine running)
I've gotten a 2111 reading. SJM web site is telling me that's the RPM
sensor having trouble.
Today I pulled the sensor and cleaned it off (thinking it may have metal
bits on it or something) and checked the electrical connection. They
were both great. Started the car, pulled the codes, and the same 2111
came up.
Then I pulled off the connector for the timing pin while the engine was
running, and pulled the ECU codes (engine still running with sensor
unplugged) and only got the same 2111.
Any ideas what's causing the CEL to come on? I'd appreciate any input
you can share. Car still runs and drives great...no boost loss. I'd just
like to fix whatever problem is going on. Thanks in advance-
