Phil,
I replaced one myself in an '88 5000T about 10 years ago. You're right about the foam deteriorating. I was afraid to scrape off the old material and re-use the flimsy cardboard backing material, but a skilled shop might be able to apply their own material to it saving the cost of an OEM unit. I don't remember the R&R taking more than a day.
I'd look for a shop that will give you previous customer contacts so you can check out the work. Keep in mind their material will only "come close" to the OEM.
You may simply wish to purchase an OEM unit (and adhesive) and have them install it with some help from your manual.
Good Luck!
Dan
