A/C compressor removal

Bentley's description of compressor removal is a drawing of the compressor
and its bracket.  

Do I remove the entire bracket and compressor assembly intact and then
separate?  Can I just undo the screws holding the compressor to the upper
bracket and take off the lower bracket instead?   

Bentley shows the part where the hoses connect as part of the compressor,
but it looks like it's a separate fixture bolted to the compressor.  Can I
take out those bolts (look like alan screws) and leave that fixture and the
hoses intact on the car while replacing the compressor itself?
