Avant stereo

Craig-

First of all, don't use that POS Eclipse deck in the first place......

Look under the middle of the back seat for a small black amp. My advice is
trash it and run RCA lines from your new deck (say a Nakamichi or high end
sony). Then run a fused power line from the battery (on the opposite side of
the car from the RCA cables) to a pair of amps and mount them on a board
next to the spare tire. I put in a third amp and a subwoofer in the Left
rear storage compartment.

The only factory wires from the head unit I would use are, ground (usually
brown), red or orange (usually 12v fron the ignition key), and yellow (12
volts constant). There are a few more wires I recall - blue(?) is 12v to
trigger (not power!) the amp under the seat and another wire which is
connected to the instrument panel dimmer. This will dim your test light as
you dim your cluster switch.

I have installed over 100 car stereo systems in my life and *I can not vouch
for my color code memory on the Avant* so pull out your test light and start
checking!

The cheaters why to find speaker wires is to use a 9v battery. If you hook
one side of a speaker to - and the other the other to + the speaker will
make a popping noise. If you pull the grill, you can tell the polarity of
the speaker by which way the cone moves when you apply the voltage. Never
hook up your speakers out of phase or they will sound like am radio......
My advice is to run all new speaker wires (on the same side of the car as
the RCA cables) and replace the ancient dried out old paper cone fuzz
makers.

I have a few pix of some avant systems that I have done. Email me if
interested and I will dig them up. The Avant make for an amazing sounding
space if done correctly. If you do nothing else, add an amplified subwoofer.
You will be amazed.

I have been going to update the stereo in our 91 200 20v Turbo Avant for
awhile now. The other day I pulled the stock stereo out and there were more
wires than I was ready for. Does anyone have an easy description of what
goes where? I am putting in an Eclipse CD player so I just need to know what
color wires would go where on the Eclipse unit. I have done quite a few
stereo installs but like I said there were more wires than made sense. I
looked in the Bentley but did not find what I was looking for.

thanks in advance,
