Lost reverse gear this morning

Bernie, Kneale, other fans,
I drove the car up on ramps and crawled under. I could not find
anything loose in the linkage where it enters the transmission.
It appears the only way I can see the other elements in the
linkage is to open up the shifter from inside the car. (I got
occupied with family stuff after that.) I will probably do
this sometime later today.
Some "experimental" results/observations from yesterday:
a) All other gears, including fifth, engage with no ambiguity (except for
reverse..)
b) The amount of reverse "engagement" based on a short burst of gear noise
when I release the clutch, seems dependent on the slope of the car from
back to front. If the front of the car is much higher, it makes more noise,
on level ground, there is no noise at all.
c) As I roll slowly downhill, engine idling, with the car supposedly in
reverse,
I would have expected a reverse gear spur with a few broken teeth to
continuously
engage and the break free as the good sections and bad sections rotate into
mesh
position. There was no engagement at all, implying the gear is probably OK.
If any of these symptoms turn on a lightbulb in your heads, let me know. If
the upper
parts of the linkage seem to be set correctly, I will start to think it may
be a broken
shift fork or lever or something like that internal to the transmission
Alan
