Vag Com Ugly Cable

Tom:  Its going to depend on how your hitching it up. 
Assuming you have Vag-Com, and one of their interfaces like Hex-Com:

then the interface from the serial port of your laptop to the ugly cable will 
absorb any short in the K line.
If you go Ugly cable directly (somehow) to the computer all bets are off.
