Pete,
It sounds like broken wires in your hatch hinge. To get to the broken
wires, you remove the trim panel on the ceiling back by the hatch. It is
the one with the light in it. There is a screw you have to remove in the
light and I think one out towards each side of the trim panel.
I repaired about 10 broken wires in my 1991 200q 20v Avant about a month
ago. I added more wire length to each wire so that less strain is put on
the wires when the hatch is opened and closed.
