Some pumps get noisy and run for years.  Others get noisy
and die shortly thereafter.  Fuel pumps are like a box of
chocolates -- you never know what you are going to get.

I know of two things that lead to extended cranking.  1) The
fuel injector seals leak, letting the injectors lose pressure
and requiring some time for the fuel pump to pump the pressure
back up. 2) The other is a check valve at/near the fuel pump
which fails, letting fuel drain back into the tank, and requiring
time for the pump to pump the pressure back up.
