I am still on my original ignition switch, but I tried to help Larry here:

The knee bar is held by 4mm hex screws: two at the bottom by the pedals, one
under the column, and two on the end behind the tricky sliding side panel
(which is less brittle at warmer temperatures). I don't think any knee-bar
fasteners were philips-head on my car, but it's been a while since I was in
there.
