Strange Fan Happenings

Okay gang...'91 20v Avant.
 
My daughter parked the other day and the fan ran and ran (sounded like a  jet 
engine) after the engine was turned off.  Eventually, it ran down the  
battery.
 
We disconnected the ground to the fan, charged the battery and ran it down  
to the mechanic, who can't replicate the problem.
 
Is this a standard occurrence with this car?  Anybody have the  anticipated 
fix?
