Distributor shaft gear

The plastic ones get brittle over time, often resulting in failing into many
small plastic pieces. We put together a large group purchase of custom
fabbed metal gears a couple of years ago. That was done because in the
event of failure, there was no other source to replace the gear except
buying one already attached to a new distributor.
So...in many cases it was seen as preventative medicine, or perhaps Bernie
would call it "fat wallet syndrome." Oh, and the metal gears make your car
faster too.

What is the benefit to go to the metal gear?
