distributor questions

Hello,

I've been away for the computer for a week
when catching up with my emails I read about a group buy for metal 
distributor gears

I'm mostly likely to late but that brings up a question
when my car is started form cold there is a lose gear like sound for about a 
minute
from what I've gathered form reading here and talking with my mechanic it is 
the distributor and it's workings making the noise
how worried should I be? would the metal gear fix this? or is it the whole 
workings going?

I've had the car for over a year know but I'm still a rookie--
