I don't think I have ever heard anyone propose re-using the Bose amps. Due
to their proprietary strange impedance values I thought they were guaranteed
not to work successfully with any other speakers than the (really nice)
paper-cone Bose units. And since one has to remove the Bose amps to get to
the speakers to replace them, might as well can the amps as well to reduce
fire danger.

Here's what I did almost 10 years ago:

I have been toying with the idea of replacing my CD head unit so that I can
have a better iPod interface than FM modulator, but it's apparently too old
for any changer-impersonating adaptor and I can't find a new head unit that
has a "matching" display like the orange backlighting I have now. And then
again, spending $1k on a stereo for a $13k car is a bit different from
spending $1k on a stereo for a $4k car. That's not replacing the head unit,
that's the whole rip-Bose-and-replace exercise.
