Chuck,
Why don't you explicitly quantify your design objectives of this mod. for
the benefit of the list?
To me it appears to be primarily cosmetic. I'm sure that you realize that
stiffness in not measured in tons, and you may even agree with me that, to
be effective such a brace must be at least an order of magnitude stiffer
than are the deflecting structures that you intend to stiffen. IMO, yours
is not, because of the imposed end moments and the lack of concentricity of
your axially loaded column with the force axis. You may wish to read up on
columns, their stiffness and failure modes in any handbook of engineering
fundamentals.
