I think on the wiring, what you are seeing is what is normally
underneath some rubber/plastic sheathing, which originally covers the
aluminum foil-looking shielding.  As it ages, it gets brittle and just
flakes off.  On some or all of my cars with knock sensors, there are
sections of the black insulation that are missing.  I was thinking
about trying to recover them with something to protect the shielding
better.
