Burning Oil?

I'm new to this thread so may have missed the start
Have you tried testing the compressions, hot and cold?
i'm thinking uneven bore wear or a dodgy ring.

daft suggestion No2 would be to whip the cam cover off
and make sure
that there is nothing partially blocking the oil
return to the sump from
the head.
maybe the head is over-full so when it sits, with the
valves immersed in
oil, some seeps down the stems which would burn off
when you start ans
would be worse after it has sat for a while.........

It's not a blocked crank case breather pod is it? 054

the same pod used to make 850cc - 1.3L polos and golfs
smoke a bit,
especially if the car had missed a few oil changes.
they used to be cheap, so might be a thing to try.

I realise that I'm clutching at straws, but that's the
point isn't it!

Also, how many previous owners say 'it was ok when I
had it'. Time for a
spade full of salt perchance!
