I don't think there is a code for carbon canister, there definitely is a
code for the cc frequency valve. You should verify this (listers??).
The cc frequency valve is a blue plastic solenoid piece tied into the
crankcase breather system and the carbon canister. It just gets a
signal and opens to vent the canister. (I assume the engine has to be
under vacuum for it to open, if you have the Bentley you can verify my
poor memory, so check the lines and wiring going to it first). It is
located at the upper center rear of the engine. It is a bosch part and
seldomly requires replacement. I verified mine was bad by apply voltage
and seeing the valve did not move. The replacement procedure is fairly
straight forward, move a couple things out of the way, undo the hoses
and electrical connection and reverse with new valve, it is a tight fit
back there. I believe it cost about 75$, and took about two beers to
replace it. (45 min) if you need further info let me know.

David,
I had a couple of fault codes pulled with a VAG 1552 scanner, one of
them
was 01247 which pointed to the carbon canister, but perhaps this too, is
the
frequency valve?

I don't remember a whole lot, other than the carbon canister was fine
and the carbon canister frequency valve had gone bad. Why do you think
you need to replace the carbon canister?
