Summer tires mess up handling

That sounds very much like my wheel-clearance situation using the 
BIRA Sys 3 brake setup. I also use 16" wheels, which barely clear (by 
about 2 mm) and I must take care about placement of any glue-on wheel 
weights, lest they be gouged or even dislodged by the calipers. I 
avoided going to 17" wheels in the belief that the shallow(er) rubber 
wouldn't offer adequate protection against wheel damage from our 
pot-holed streets and rural roads. But last week (after 3 seasons of 
use)  I managed to find a pothole that did some wheel damage (both 
driver-side wheels!) as well as damaging both tires! Not a very deep 
pothole either. I think I wasn't going fast enough. ;-)
