Inner cv and axle play

In and out is fine, as stated by others. That is a requirement as the
suspension moves throughout it's travel. Up and down is not good. Just
checked my V8, my 4000Q and my A1 Jetta. None vibrate, none make funny
noises. (I guess that makes them "good" cars ;-) ) None have any up
and down play at all.

Where is the play? Is it just in the inner joint, or does the axle
flange move up and down as well?
