Metal Distributor gear

Hi all - fairly new to the '91 200 world.  But I still have my '93 S4 so at
least knew what I was getting myself into.

The one thing I've been meaning to ask the list - what's the source of these
metal distributor gears I hear about?

I don't know how often it becomes "necessary" to replace the original (I
assume plastic) gear, but I assume it's catastrophic and happens without
warning.  I'd like avoid that.
