Also consider that output of cold air (when heat is needed) is often 
caused by malfunction of the heater air control-flap  assembly (i.e., 
motor with feedback-potentiometer). This can often be verified by 
simply setting the temperature to a value somewhat higher (or lower) 
than usual--e.g., +/- 4 or 5 degrees. If hot air suddenly results 
(even for a short time), you likely need a new flap-control (motor).
